Someone picks up a box of cards and says the blue is off. It’s not wrong, exactly. It just isn’t the blue that was on the screen. This is the single most common surprise in printing, and it has a clean explanation.
Light versus ink
Your monitor makes color by emitting light: red, green and blue, added together, with pure white being all three at full power. That’s RGB.
A press makes color by putting ink on paper and letting light bounce off it: cyan, magenta, yellow and black, subtracting from white. That’s CMYK.
These two systems can’t reach all the same colors. RGB can produce colors that no combination of ink can match: the electric blues, the neon greens, the glowing oranges. When a file with those colors goes to print, they get converted to the nearest ink equivalent, and the nearest available is duller. Nothing failed; the color was never printable.
The colors that shift most
In rough order of how surprised people are: bright blues tend to go slightly purple, neon and fluorescent greens lose their glow, vivid oranges and reds soften, and rich purples can go muddy. Meanwhile most photographic colors, skin tones, earth tones, grays and blacks convert almost invisibly.
If your brand color is in the first group, it’s worth knowing before you print a thousand of something.
Your monitor is also lying, a bit
Even ignoring RGB versus CMYK: no two screens agree. Brightness, contrast, color temperature and calibration all differ, and phone screens are the least reliable of all. They’re tuned to look punchy, which is the opposite of accurate. A file that looks perfect on your laptop may look different on your phone and different again on ours.
This is why a printed sample beats a screenshot every single time when you’re trying to match something.
What to do if color genuinely matters
Say so up front. “This has to match our existing signs” changes how we handle the job. Told after the fact, it’s a reprint conversation.
Bring a printed sample. The old card, the existing sign, the pantone chip, the letterhead. Something physical we can put next to the proof. Not a photo of it, and not a screenshot.
Ask about a printed proof. For high-stakes or high-quantity jobs, seeing it on paper before the full run is the only way to be certain, and it’s much cheaper than reprinting a thousand pieces.
Build files in CMYK when you can. If you’re working in software that lets you choose, working in CMYK from the start means you see roughly what you’ll get instead of discovering the conversion at the end.
Why the same color looks different on different materials
Even with identical files and identical ink, the surface changes the result. Glossy stock reflects more light and looks more saturated; matte and uncoated stock absorb more ink and read softer. Vinyl banner material, coroplast and aluminum composite all take ink differently again.
So a logo on a glossy business card, a matte flyer and a vinyl banner will not be identical. They’ll be close, and close is what’s achievable. If you need them as close as possible, tell us they’re a set and we’ll handle them as one.
The practical version
For most jobs, none of this needs your attention. Send the file, we convert it, it looks right. It matters when you have a specific brand color, when the piece has to match something that already exists, or when the print run is large enough that a surprise is expensive.
