Same-day printing in Sacramento: what’s actually possible by 5 PM

An honest breakdown of what makes it out the door today, what doesn’t, and why the cutoff is 10 AM instead of “whenever you call.”

“Same-day” is on a lot of signs on Fulton Avenue. It’s worth explaining what it means here, including the parts that aren’t flattering.

The cutoff is 10:00 AM, and it’s real

Order by 10:00 AM Monday through Friday with print-ready art and most standard jobs are ready that afternoon before we close at 5. That’s the promise, and it’s built on arithmetic rather than optimism: printing, laminating, cutting, hemming, grommeting and pressing all take real machine time, jobs run in a queue, and a shop that closes at 5 has to know what’s in the queue by mid-morning.

Order at 2 PM and the honest answer is usually tomorrow. Tomorrow is still faster than most shops’ rush service, but we’d rather tell you that at 2:05 than have you find out at 4:45.

What genuinely goes out same day

  • Vinyl banners. Hemmed and grommeted, $6/sq ft
  • Yard signs and coroplast. $9/sq ft, including campaign runs and real estate riders
  • Rigid signs. Foam board, PVC, aluminum composite, in normal sizes
  • Business cards, flyers, postcards: the standard runs on the posted list
  • Shirts and apparel. Pressed here, from $15
  • Window lettering and decals. Printed and cut same day; installation is scheduled separately
  • Menus, forms, and reorders from files we already have

What doesn’t, and why

  • Vehicle graphics. Printing is fast; application isn’t, and it can’t be rushed without showing. We schedule the vehicle.
  • Building, monument and pole signs. Fabrication plus install scheduling plus, often, a permit. Weeks, not hours, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
  • Anything laminated or with a specialty finish. Extra processes take extra time.
  • Very large runs. A thousand of something is a different job than fifty of something.
  • Jobs where the file needs real design work. If we’re building the artwork from scratch, the design has to happen before the printing can.

The Friday problem

We’re closed Saturday and Sunday. So if your event is Saturday, your actual deadline is Friday at 10:00 AM, not Friday afternoon, and definitely not “sometime Friday.” This catches more people than anything else in this article, because Friday feels like it has more room in it than it does.

If your event is on a weekend, work backwards and give yourself a day of slack. Thursday is a much more comfortable place to be.

Three things that make same-day more likely

Call, don’t email. (916) 944-7195 reaches someone who can see the queue and give you a real answer in about thirty seconds. An email sent at 9:50 AM asking whether same-day is possible has spent your entire margin on the asking.

Send the file with the question. “Can you do a 3×8 banner today?” and an attached PDF is one conversation. The same question with no file is three.

Know your size and quantity before you call. Measure the fence. Count the crew. It sounds obvious; it’s the most common reason a five-minute order becomes a two-day order.

Why we can do it at all

About 95% of what we sell is made in this building. Nothing gets uploaded to a plant in another state and shipped back. That’s the entire mechanism behind same-day, and it’s also why the person answering the phone can walk twenty feet and look at your job instead of checking a status field.

It also means you can walk in and watch it happen, which people do more often than you’d think.
